Perry is Perry is a Chicago native who was born to Laurie Metcalf and Jeff Perry. The role of Jackie Harris was played by her mom in both of her two appearances on Roseanne. Perry was forbidden to start acting by her parents until she reached adulthood, as they feared the strain it might create. Perry was shy during high school and was not a performer. She began acting at Northwestern University to gain friends after she was moved from Boston University. Perry moved to New York, where she landed small roles in series like Law & Order: Criminal Intent. The feeling of homesickness brought Perry her back home California, where theater jobs were readily available. In 2013, she appeared in The Other Place on Broadway with her mother. Kevin McKidd, her father Kevin McKidd performed in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize-winning drama Anna Christie alongside her in 2015. In the year 2016, Perry appeared on nine episodes of ABC's thriller The Family. Her father played her character in her role on the ABC drama Scandal. In the same year, she was cast as a young character of Mary Cooper (Sheldon Cooper's mother) on Young Sheldon, a spin-off of the CBS sitcom The Big Bang Theory again portraying a younger version of her mother's. Despite her family link to the character she received the role through an audition.
